Ethan was standing and looking at the morning light oozing through the trees. He seemed to be studying it. Ethan sat back down on the log, suddenly tired, dipped his head and rested.

Hilly and I found a smooth place to lie down. I removed my coat and let her lay on it. I placed the shotgun on the ground and placed my hand on the stock. Nat came over and squatted down beside me. He said, “I’m tired. Know you are too. But someone needs to be awake after what I saw. But I don’t want to alarm the others.”

I made myself sit up. “You’re right,” I said.

“Look here, you seem worse off than me. Why don’t you sleep for a while, and I’ll take first look? I’ll wake you after a while.”

“Dudley can be in on this too,” I said.

“He could, but he’s already out like a light. I think if I shift a bit, then you, it’ll be deep morning. We should move out as soon as possible, get to the tower, and maybe find food there. Then we can find the village.”

“Seems like a good idea,” I said.

“Yeah. Maybe I ought to hold the shotgun while I watch?”

“Of course,” I said, and gave it to him.
